Indonesian citizens and “Indonesianists” gathered for the 18th Indonesia Day in the bay city of San Francisco, California on Sunday (Saturday inJakarta) to celebrate the cultural heritage of the world’s largest archipelagic nation.
The annual event, which this year took place at Union Square Park, featured a batik fashion show by Indonesian designer Itang Yunasz and martial art performances from the California-based Bunga Cantik Pencak Silat.
Visitors to the event, who were mostly Indonesians, also enjoyed a performance by a bamboo-instrument orchestra, led by West Java’s Saung Angklung Mang Udjo, and Balinese dances by dancers from the GadungKasturi, a California-based Balinese cultural center.
Food vendors from Indonesian restaurants served traditional delicacies to indulge the visitors’taste buds.
According to its annual website, Indonesia Day is aimed to “celebrate, commemorate and introduce the diversity and heritage of the Indonesian culture through the showcase of Indonesian art, dance, music and food”.
Indonesia Day 2012 was organized by the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in San Francisco, in cooperation with the Indonesian Students Association (Permias San Francisco Bay Area) and the Indonesian American Community in Northern California.
